I recently skimmed James Miller's 2012 book "Singularity Rising",
which focuses on "Friendly" vs "Hostile" AI, the latter being
superintelligences that outcompete humans and biological life
for the resources of Earth. But the earth is too small, too hot,
too corrosive, and too energy-poor for any ambitious swarm of
hyperintelligent minds to remain here.

Billions of years ago, hydrothemal vents on the ocean floor may
have been the only home for biological life. Today, the descendants
of those archaea are still there, thriving in rich communities with
other lifeforms. Humans pretty much leave them alone, using
energy and material sources far better suited to our purposes.

The best substrate for AI is a Dyson shell far from the Sun,
composed of some future evolution of thinsats. Beyond the Kuiper
belt, operating temperatures are low, efficiencies are high, and
quantum coherence isn't destroyed. The best materials are in the
gas giants. Why would the next dominant intelligence covet our
tiny little speck of iron any more than we covet deep sea vents?
